Do I need any special skills?
All you need is a genuine love for children, some free time, and a willingness to work under professional supervision.

What can I do as a volunteer?

What is the process to become a volunteer?
1. All volunteers are required to complete a volunteer agreement form each school year. Each volunteer needs to complete his or her own separate form. Please do not have two volunteers on one form.

2. If a volunteer is coaching, they will need to fill out the volunteer agreement form and the volunteer coaching form.

3. If a volunteer requires a background check, they will need to email or call to schedule an appointment with the Volunteer Office. (email here)

4. Trainings are provided by the individual schools, not the volunteer office.

Do I need a background check?
Volunteer positions that involve the volunteer working with a student one-on-one require a background check. These positions include (but are not limited to):
- Read with a Child
       - Driving students
- Volunteer Coaching
- Overnight field-trip chaperone
- Watch D.O.G.S
- Lunch Lizard program
- Marching Band Trips
- Reading Aide (when a volunteer works with a student in the hallway)
- Foster Grandparents & RSVP Volunteers

If you need a background check, contact April Hart at [email protected] or (970) 254-5114 for more information and to schedule an appointment.

*BACKGROUND CHECKS ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY*
call 970-254-5114 to schedule an appointment.

I was fingerprinted last year. Do I need to do it again?
Once a volunteer has completed a background check, they will not be required to complete a background check again unless their background has expired in the system.

Current D51 employees and students are not required to complete a background check.

How much time does volunteering require?

Volunteers are asked to attend a volunteer orientation session and are encouraged to take advantage of the many training opportunities, which are provided to enhance their skills. Apart from that, schools will work with you to create a schedule that is beneficial for everyone.
