Grand Junction, CO - Parents, teachers, students, and community members are invited to look at potential D51 curriculum at open houses Aug. 12, 15, and 19. Attendees will have the opportunity to review two sets of curriculum materials under consideration to replace D51’s current elementary school literacy materials.

The Open Houses will take place from 4:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Harry Butler Board Room at 455 N. 22nd St. Each open house will have the same format, so attendees only need to come to one of them.

Feedback from the open houses will be shared with the Instructional Resource Selection Team. The team is a 47-member group of teachers from each D51 elementary school and other D51 staff who have been working for months to research and narrow down the choices for curriculum adoption. The team will make a recommendation for one of the two remaining choices in the fall. The D51 School Board is expected to make a final choice by the end of 2022, and the new materials will be implemented when school starts in 2023-24.

The district is adopting new reading, writing, and phonics curriculum materials for elementary schools following 2019 legislation that clarified which resources Colorado districts can use for grades K-3. D51 is undergoing a new resource adoption for grades K-5 to improve continuity across schools and grades.
