Grand Junction, CO - Today kicked off another summer of fueling successful learning for students. The Lunch Lizard, School District 51's mobile summer food program, will commence its ninth summer of service, running from Monday through Thursday each week (excluding the week of the 4th of July) until July 27th. The program will provide free meals to any youth aged 18 or younger. Waivers during Covid for grab-n-go meals have expired, and all meals must be consumed on-site. On Thursdays, Kids Aid or Food Bank of the Rockies will join the Lunch Lizard to offer take-home pantry food for the weekend.
The Lunch Lizard represents an innovative approach by D51 to cater to hungry students who may face difficulties accessing meals during the summer months. There are two routes: one serving Grand Junction and Orchard Mesa and another serving the Clifton area. The schedule and stops for these routes may be subject to change based on participation. Furthermore, in addition to the two food trucks serving neighborhoods with high rates of low-income families in Mesa County, D51 will also serve meals from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at six schools, including Dos Rios Elementary, Pear Park Elementary, Rocky Mountain Elementary, Chipeta Elementary, Shelledy Elementary, and Orchard Mesa Middle School. These meals will be provided inside the cafeteria.
